standard mileage method
Standard mileage method — you cannot also deduct actual vehicle expenses (gas, repairs, depreciation) for the same vehicle and year. This is an estimate, not tax advice. Consult a tax professional. Rate per the IRS 2026 announcement.
How the mileage deduction works
The standard mileage method is the simplest way for contractors to deduct vehicle use. The math is one line:
The IRS sets the rate each year to approximate the real cost of operating a vehicle — fuel, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation rolled into a single per-mile number. For 2026 that rate is 72.5 cents per mile, per the official IRS announcement.
Worked example
You log 12,000 business miles in 2026 driving between job sites and supply houses. 12,000 × 72.5¢ = $8,700 in deductible vehicle expense. At a 24% effective tax rate, that's roughly $2,088 back in your pocket — just for keeping a clean mileage log.
